Description

This second course in our four-course series "Introduction to Autism Spectrum Disorders in General Education Classrooms" is designed to deepen your knowledge of Individualized Education Programs or an IEP. This includes the federal laws in place that support an IEP, its importance, what’s included in an IEP, and the role of the general education teacher in its design, development, and implementation.

Objectives
  • You will gain a deeper understanding of the value of an Individualized Education Program from both a legal and functional perspective. You will learn how the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (known as IDEA) intersects with the IEP. You will review the qualifying conditions defined by IDEA and what school districts must provide in accordance with federal laws.
  • You will understand how the evolution of legislation granting civil rights to disabled individuals progressed into providing equal opportunity for all individuals with disabilities. You will also learn what is required to ensure children with disabilities spend as much time as possible with peers who do not receive special education.
  • You will learn what it takes to prepare for and participate in an IEP meeting; including specific actions you need to take. You will learn who should be involved in an IEP meeting along with the requirements of each role. Time will also be spent talking about the expectations of the general education teacher during the IEP meeting including the information you should provide and your role in implementing a child’s IEP in your classroom.
  • You will learn the importance of creating SMART Goals that states in tangible, measurable terms specifically how the student will progress and succeed in the classroom. You will uncover what goes into constructing an IEP, from defining the child’s present level of performance to crafting measurable goals designed to meet the child’s ongoing academic and functional needs. You will also examine sample goal statements to determine how well they address IDEA criteria. Time will also be spent on the components of a child’s daily IEP planning form.
