<li class="productBullet">You will gain a better understanding of autism. Here, you will learn what autism is, its history, myths and misconceptions, as well as helpful terminology.</li>
<li class="productBullet">You will understand why understanding autism is important to you as a teacher. You will learn how to make your classrooms more inclusive and take a closer look at what the law requires of you. You will find research that supports the need to raise our educational bar to include children with autism spectrum disorder and make the connection that academic success is directly related to behavioral maturity. And as a teacher, you have a professional responsibility to provide students with a safe and caring learning environment.</li>
<li class="productBullet">You will discover the various characteristics of autism, including how to communicate, understand behavior, sensory sensitivities, and sensory integration. You will also learn the term "executive function" and why it’s particularly important for success in the classroom.</li>
<li class="productBullet">You will spend time learning to make your classroom more inclusive with concepts like Universal Design for Learning, making accommodations for children with autism spectrum disorder and your classroom structure.</li>

This includes the federal laws in place that support an IEP, its importance, what’s included in an IEP, and the role of the general education teacher in its design, development, and implementation.</p>
<h5 style="margin-top: 10px;">Objectives</h5>
<ul>
<li class="productBullet">You will gain a deeper understanding of the value of an Individualized Education Program from both a legal and functional perspective. You will learn how the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (known as IDEA) intersects with the IEP. You will review the qualifying conditions defined by IDEA and what school districts must provide in accordance with federal laws.</li>
<li class="productBullet">You will understand how the evolution of legislation granting civil rights to disabled individuals progressed into providing equal opportunity for all individuals with disabilities. You will also learn what is required to ensure children with disabilities spend as much time as possible with peers who do not receive special education.</li>
<li class="productBullet">You will learn what it takes to prepare for and participate in an IEP meeting; including specific actions you need to take. You will learn who should be involved in an IEP meeting along with the requirements of each role. Time will also be spent talking about the expectations of the general education teacher during the IEP meeting including the information you should provide and your role in implementing a child’s IEP in your classroom.</li>
<li class="productBullet">You will learn the importance of creating SMART Goals that states in tangible, measurable terms specifically how the student will progress and succeed in the classroom. You will uncover what goes into constructing an IEP, from defining the child’s present level of performance to crafting measurable goals designed to meet the child’s ongoing academic and functional needs. You will also examine sample goal statements to determine how well they address IDEA criteria. Time will also be spent on the components of a child’s daily IEP planning form.</li>

You will also expand your understanding of ethical teaching which along with<br />
Effective Teaching Standards provide a safe and caring learning environment for your students.</li>
<li class="productBullet">You will gain a deeper look into Universal Design for Learning (UDL) and how you can build flexibility into the ways instruction is presented to students. You will learn the ways UDL builds this flexibility through differentiated instruction, and modifications and accommodations.</li>
<li class="productBullet">You will learn how to integrate UDL, differentiated instruction, modifications and accommodations, along with other tools and techniques into your classroom. Time will be spent sharing approaches and examples for modifying and making accommodations to the curriculum; including Scaffolding and Task Analysis. You will learn proven strategies for effectively modifying the curriculum using tools like Priming, and Visual Supports. You will also learn unique ways to structure your classroom to meet the needs of diverse students.</li>
